The Expect Respect Programme
What is Expect Respect?
It is a toolkit of interactive lesson plans to promote healthy relationships for students from Reception to Year 13. Each session follows the same format which is active, fun and challenging.
Each session includes:
A warm up activity
Main Lesson
Plenary
Each session stands alone and is approximately one hour in length and Lighthouse provides all the resources required.
The Expect Respect Programme has been specifically designed to be delivered in schools in collaboration with the Home Office and Women’s Aid Federation of England, as part of the PSHE programme.
What does Expect Respect deliver? And what will students experience?
Expect Respect Covers:
The right to be respected in all our relationships
Managing feelings and accepting responsibility for our own feelings and behaviour
Helping to resolve conflict
Changing beliefs and attitudes about men and women
Challenging assumptions about gender and power
Knowing the difference between abusive and non-abusive relationships
The consistent message that abuse is not acceptable
Understanding that abuse is a crime
What is consent
Highlighting the role of peers in providing support
Giving information about where to get help
Why should Expect Respect be delivered in schools?
Recent studies have concluded the following:
33% of girls and 16% of boys reported some form of sexual abuse
25% of girls and 18% of boys reported some form of physical relationship abuse
75% of girls and 50% of boys reported some form of emotional relationship abuse
1 in 2 boys and 1 in 3 girls think it is ok to sometimes hit a women or force her to have sex
According to the NSPCC, young people do not recognise psychological or financial abuse, and social and physical control as violence, and so do not think they are in an abusive relationship because they associate domestic violence with physical violence (source NSPCC 2009)
What Lighthouse can offer
Lighthouse Women’s Aid is a Suffolk based charity which has over 45 year’s experience of working with women, young people and children who have experienced domestic abuse.
We Can Offer Suffolk Schools:
Women’s Aid Schools Advocates (WASAs) who are able to deliver Expect Respect, working alongside teachers to introduce and embed healthy relationships into their curriculum and school ethos
On-going support and advice to help resolve the concerns of young people who may be experiencing unhealthy relationships or have been affected by them
Support for school staff to safeguard the welfare of their students and themselves
