Advice For Men

Abusive behaviour is driven by a partner’s need to gain power and control. Abuse can be physical, verbal, financial or emotional. It is important to know that support is available for males as well as for females and remember you are not alone.

Talk to a trained advisor on a confidential helpline. They will listen to you, give you practical advice and information about accessing specialist help:

Increase your safety and reduce the risk:

  • Keep a record of dates and times of all incidents. If you have been injured, get medical attention from accident and emergency or your GP and they will make notes of your injuries

  • Keep your phone fully charged and in credit. Keep your phone on you at all times in case you need to make an emergency call

  • Tell a friend or family member about what has been happening

  • Keep your passport and copies of important documents in a safe place (with a friend or relative)

  • Think about telling your employer about your situation

  • Always report the violence and/or criminal damage to the police

  • Avoid retaliating as it may escalate things and you could get seriously hurt – if the police are called you may be seen as the abuser if you have retaliated and caused your partner injury
