Lighthouse was the only place where people seemed to understand

Gillian was on honeymoon when her husband first attacked her, beginning seven years of physical, mental and sexual abuse.

“I was stripped of any self confidence, any self belief,” she said. “Mentally, they play games so you question yourself all the time. Whatever you’ve done or said is wrong. They isolate you from friends and family, so you’re on your own.”

Gillian, 58, who had four children with her abuser before marrying, suffered for years without help, fearing no one would believe her.
